MCAA Principal Jumps For Marietta Reads! AR Challenge, May 23

SkydivingMarietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) principal, Dr. Karen Smits promised her students that she would jump from an airplane if her students met their Marietta Reads! Accelerated Reader (AR) goal for the year. On Sunday, May 23, Dr. Smits joined by MCAA Media Specialist, Susan Foster and MCS Instructional Technology Specialist, Stacey Buckalew jumped from 14,000 feet in Cedartown, GA. Sawyer Road AR Challenge Goes International, May 21

SR-AR celebration cruiseSawyer Road Elementary students reached their Accelerated Reader (AR) Marietta Reads! goal for the year. They recently celebrated with “The International Book Cabana” virtual cruise around the world. The school goal was to reach 45,000 AR points (an increase of 7,000 points over last year). Photos»

Elvis Rocks Principal's Challenge, May 19

A. L. Burruss Elementary students rocked out with Principal “Elvis” King to celebrate reaching their Accelerated Reader (AR) Marietta Reads! goal for the year. Dr. Science, aka Michael Holst, started the festivities with a science experiment. Mari-Etta danced with Elvis and Mrs. Christ on the school roof while students rocked in the school parking lot. Park Street AR Challenge Gets Wet and Wild, May 18

PS-AR ChallengePark Street Elementary students reached their Accelerated Reader (AR) Marietta Reads! goal for the year. They recently celebrated by Getting Wet and Wild in principal Lawson’s Jungle featuring a water slide with wading pool set to a tropical jungle theme. Over 470 students (90%) achieved their AR goal. Top ReadersLockheed Elementary, A. L. Burruss Elementary, Sawyer Road Elementary and Marietta Center for Advanced Academics students were among the Top Readers invited to the Marietta Reads! Top Reader Extravaganza for elementary students hosted by Scholastic Book Fairs in Kennesaw.

West Side AR Field Day, May 7

West Side students recently celebrated field days activities for achieving the 17,000 point level of the Marietta Reads! Accelerated Reader (AR) challenge. School principal Lawson rode a lawnmower as students tossed water balloons at her. Her lawnmower stalled out and she got soaked. All had a fun and wet day in the sun! Photos»

Marietta Reads! Factors In All-America City Selection

Marietta selected All-America City among ten best in nation, 2006 As part of the National Civic League process that led to Marietta ’s selection as an All-America City, the Judges required that the city demonstrate a program to benefit children. Marietta Reads!, the Marietta City Schools citywide effort to foster reading and literacy in the community, successfully helped the city illustrate how the program has increased student test scores and book circulation.
