Reading
Tutors Needed One Hour Per Week
Success in school starts with reading. While
reading is primarily learned in the classroom, many students need
extra time and help. Research clearly shows that children in tutoring
programs achieve academic gains and increased self confidence. Tutoring
is also a great way for individuals and groups from the community
to support learning in the schools. If you can volunteer just one hour per week,
Marietta Reads! can use you. As a volunteer, you can provide students
with one-on-one attention and the help they may not get at home
or at school. Many places in Marietta welcome literacy volunteers.
Marietta Reads! is working with one organization in particular called
Communities In Schools of Marietta/Cobb County, Inc. (CISMCC) to
place volunteers in three of the Marietta City elementary schools.
CISMCC's mission is to blend community resources with schools to
help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare
for life. The CISMCC literacy volunteer coordinator will guide you
through an hour of training at the school of your choice. You will
then be assigned two children for tutoring in back-to-back 30-minute
sessions. The day and time that you volunteer will be based on your
schedule. Other places to check for literacy volunteer
opportunities are local libraries, preschools, daycare facilities,
elementary schools, and community centers. In all cases, you will
more than likely be asked to fill out an application and undergo
a criminal background check - these are the times in which we live. For more information on the CISMCC program, please
